Keeping Healthy at 50+
AARP Segunda Juventud
April 2009
Think you’re healthy? Congratulations. But what are you doing to stay that way?
Unfortunately, Hispanics lag behind when it comes to preventive care. Hispanics are 38 percent less likely than non-Hispanics to have visited the doctor within the past year, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, missing out on key screenings.
Nearly 54 percent of Hispanic women 40+ failed to have a mammogram in the past year, for instance, while breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among Hispanic women, killing more than 1,700 in 2006. And 47 percent of Hispanic men 50+ didn’t get tested within the last year for prostate cancer, which killed an estimated 1,140 Hispanic males in 2006.
